Angry Birds 2 and Multiplayer – Coming Soon!

November 17, 2010 Leave a comment

Rovio has infected the smartphone world with an incurable addiction to their incredibly popular Angry Birds game for Android and iPhone.  How best to treat an addiction?  Release teasers to keep your following drooling for more, and that is just what Roviio’s CEO has done with mention on Angry Birds 2.  This won’t be just another set of new levels, no, no, this is going to be from the enemy pig point of view!  Have such a fierce allegiance to the Angry Birds that you could not foresee switching to the dark side?  You may change your tune when the game hits the market in the near future.  If history is any predictor, this sequel will draw you in and proceed to remove all other worries in your world.  Nothing else will matter.

On to the second, possibly more interesting news, MULTIPLAYER!  Soon you and your friends will be able to share your addictions, battling the evil pigs (or birds…) together!  There is less information about this version of Angry Birds as the development team is still analyzing the best way to bring the multiplayer experience to everyone’s favorite game.  Rest assured it is in the works!

These new versions should keep your addictions going strong for up until they release Angry Birds 3 – Birds on Patrol (insert other threequel reference here…).

Dell Streak – Looking Hot In White!!!

November 17, 2010 Leave a comment

Best Buy sure seems to have a fancy for the sexy, white smartphones lately. Looks like the white version of the Dell Streak is available in select stores for in-store pickup only. It can be reserved for and paid online if you don’t feel like hanging out at the store. More information below:

Best Buy is now selling its exclusive white Dell Streak in select stores across the US. It’s only available for in-store pickup right now, though it can be reserved and paid for online if you don’t want to spend too much time in the store. Boxes containing the white Android tablet appear to still be in transit, as stores that didn’t have any on Monday got some yesterday, so keep checking availability at your local Best Buy if you really want one.

Whether the store will eventually lose the exclusivity on the color remains to be seen, but I kind of hope it does because the Streak in white is actually quite lovely in person. It has a smooth silvery-white finish with a touch of shimmer to it and is much nicer than I expected it to be. It may not appeal to everyone, but I think customers would appreciate having more than just black (in the US) or black and red (in other countries) to choose from.

I admit that I’m a fan of the white version. It just brings a sleek and modern look to the Dell Streak. Gonna pick one up? Hit us up in the comments if you do.

Samsung Releases Giorgio Armani Branded Galaxy S Smartphone

November 16, 2010 1 comment

Samsung announced today that they’re releasing a Giorgio Armani branded Galaxy S Smartphone globally in 2011. It will roll out at first in Italy, but will then roll out everywhere else soon after.

The Giorgio Armani Samsung Galaxy S looks a lot like the AT&T Samsung Captivate. However, it comes with a Giorgio Armani logo, a special Giorgio Armani designed user interface with exclusive content, ring tones, fonts, and on/off animations. The device also runs Android 2.2 Froyo, and comes with Flash 10.1 support included.

So….. what do you think? There’s a smartphone out there for everyone? Do we have any Giorgio Armani fans out there that are just itching to get their hands on this one?

LG Bringing A 4-Inch Android Device With Dual-Core Tegra 2 And 1080P Video – Coming Early 2011

November 16, 2010 2 comments

DANG!!! LG sure is banging out a killer smartphone in early 2011 to update its Android Optimus line. How does a 8-megapixel camera, 1080p video-recording and a dual-core processor sound? Pretty darn good if I do say so myself. With NVIDIA Tegra 2 on-board this handset will have everyone smartphone addict out there salivating to get their hands on this device. Check out below for more details on the device:

Wow. LG did say it’d bring some heat to its Android Optimus line and here’s our first look at it, folks! An 8 megapixel camera-wearing, 1080p video-recording, dual-core superphone to appease all the spec fanatics out there. Aimed for release early next year, as the very first dual-core Android handset, this device will finally bring NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 into the smartphone realm. Our tipster tells us it’s codenamed Star internally, though that’s certain to change in the final product nomenclature. You might think that massive Google logo on the back would imply stock Android and you’d be right — we’re told it’ll be a nearly untouched representation of the Google OS, though it’s still not clear which version it’ll be. We’ve also spotted a front-facing camera on the front, while the innards include microSD memory expandability, microUSB connectivity, and a 1500mAh battery. Nexus who?

It sure is becoming very difficult to make smartphone choices as it seems a new device or rumor of a device comes about fairly often. Anyone going to hold out for this dual-core monster? Hit us up with a comment on your reaction.

Google Maps For Android Updated To Version 4.7

November 16, 2010 Leave a comment

Google Maps for Andriod has been bumped to version 4.7 which now includes Google’s Hotspot recommendation system. Hotspot allows you to discover new places based on findings and opinions from yourself and your friends. Below is how Hotspot will integrate into your Android device:

Rate places on the go — Now you can write and publish ratings and reviews from your mobile phone. We make it quick and easy with a new rating widget designed for rating places on the go. Install it from your homescreen by going to Menu > Add > Widgets > Rate Places. You can also post ratings and reviews directly from any Place page. So, when you polish off the crispiest carnitas taco you’ve ever eaten, you can pull out your Android phone to celebrate the event and give that taqueria the public love it deserves.

Get Google Maps 4.7 for Android 1.6 and above everywhere Maps is already available. Just search for Google Maps in Android Market (or tap here from your phone).

By the way, if you’re an iPhone user, good news: we’ll soon have a Places app that allows you to rate and get place recommendations as well. Alternatively, you can rate and get place recommendations from your phone browser (iPhone and Android) in the US. Just visit the Places tab at google.com as we roll out over the next day.

So, fire up your Android device and update Google Maps. Let us know how the new Hotspot recommendation is working out for you Android owners.

Galaxy Tab 2 on Video with AMOLED Screen

November 15, 2010 Leave a comment

It is like the old cliche, you’ve got to call a duck a duck.  If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, it’s a duck, and what we have here is a 7″ AMOLED Galaxy Tab shown at FPD-International in Japan.  The Samsung booth had an array of prototypes on hand from flexible AMOLED displays to a 3D AMOLED TV.  These are the kind of conferences I need to start attending because it is great to see the highest technology on display for everyone to see.

This  AMOLED screen has a resolution of 1024 x 600, and is reportedly due out in 2011.  The video I have included in this post is taken in  the Samsung booth at this conference by the folks at netbooknews.com.  The entire almost-4 minute video is worth watching if you want a look into the future of LCD technology at Samsung (read: folding 5″ AMOLED screen, flexible AMOLEDs), but the spot specific to the AMOLED-outfitted Galaxy Tab is just shy of the 1 minute mark.

Pretty cool, specifically about the Galaxy Tab as that is technology we will most likely see in the U.S.  Thoughts?  Will you hold off on buying the TFT-LCD Galaxy Tab, waiting for this new screen?  Let us know in the comments!

Cobra announced today that their popular iRadar app that is currently available for iPhone users will be available for Android users in early 2011. That’s right, you’ll now be able to race down the street at high rates of speed (definitely NOT recommended by us here at TSR!) knowing that you’ve got the protection of Cobra on your dashboard!

“We are very excited to make the Cobra iRadar system available to Android users, who now represent over one-third of the smartphone market,” said Sally Washlow, senior vice president of marketing and sales for Cobra Electronics. As Ms. Washlow pointed out, between the two operating systems Cobra iRadar will be accessible to a significant majority of U.S. smartphone users.

Samsung Nexus S Specs Leak, Launch Imminent?

November 15, 2010 Leave a comment

Over the past week we have seen multiple sources begin to leak out information about the Samsung Nexus S.  Engadget leaked the first (actual?) images of the device, the rear-view of which can be seen above.  Today’s big news surrounding this long-rumored phone is all about specifications.  Pictures are dandy as they give a rough estimate to final shape and help prove such a device does exist on more than paper, but specifications are what will sell this new phone from Samsung/Google.

What is in store for the future Nexus S owners?  The (Best Buy) screen capture posted by phandroid starts to outline how competitive this smartphone will be.  For starters, the supported network bands speak to T-mobile’s towers.  This fits with the screen capture pulled from Google Cache by phoneArena.com.  Unfortunate enough is that the Nexus S is not including support for T-Mobile’s HSPA+ at this time (this could all change before launch, as most of this information is about pre-production units).  The camera has a 5.0 MP sensor and the power comes from a 1500mAh unit.  Still missing from the specification sheets are some of the most important details of processor speed (although rumored to be a dual-core unit), operating system (Gingerbread has been mentioned), and memory capacity.

Do you own a Nexus One?  Looking to pick up the next iteration in the Nexus series before the end of 2010?  Sound off in the comments section and let us know your plans!
