TSR Device Review – Motorola DROID 2

September 6, 2010 Leave a comment

I was lucky enough to put the Motorola DROID 2 through it’s paces, thanks to the good folks over at Verizon Wireless. Thanks again Verizon Wireless for allowing me to review this product.

First off, I want to say that I was pretty excited to give this one a try, as I own a Motorola DROID (1) and also the HTC Droid Incredible, so I am familiar with Android devices, and was looking forward to comparing the D1 to the D2. Right out of the gate it looks a little bit different. The coloring of the device is a a bit silver on the front, and blue on the back. So it’s different than the black of D1.

KEYBOARD

The DROID 2 packs two keyboards, just like the DROID 1 did, a touch screen keyboard and also a slide out physical keyboard. They’ve definitely improved on the keyboard, making the keys a bit more raised and squishy (technical term), and also they got rid of that horrible D-Pad and replaced it with simple arrow buttons. Still not 100% impressed with the physical keyboard, the spacing is a bit strange, I prefer the touch keyboard and in fact, can type on it much easier.

SCREEN

The screen hasn’t been changed, it’s still packing a 3.7 inch screen and it’s as vibrant as ever. I prefer the Motorola screen to the HTC screen, the colors are much more rich and brighter. The screen seemed to have been as zippy as the DROID X when compared side by side. There wasn’t MUCH lag, but there was a bit of lag. To be expected, it’s a beast of a device. Takes some time to move that bad boy around! :)

CAMERA

The camera on this device is as to be expected. It takes great photos, definitely sharper than that of a BlackBerry device, so there are no real surprises here.

Here are some specs on this device to give you an idea of what to expect:

  • OS: Android 2.2 (Froyo)
  • 5 megapixel camera with digital zoom, autofocus and dual LED flash
  • WiFi, GPS
  • 3G Mobile Hotspot
  • Google Maps
  • Adobe Flash 10.1
  • QuickOffice
  • Up to 8GB onboard memory, 8GB microSD pre-installed, expandable to 32GB
  • 1GHz Processor

So as you can see, there are a few upgrades from the DROID 1, but for the most part, Motorola took what needed fixin’ on the DROID 1 and put it out as the DROID 2.

All and all its a great device, I do prefer it to the DROID 1, I think they made the right changes/fixes from DROID 1, and I’d recommend it to anyone. Pick one up right now at your local Verizon Wireless store or online at Verizon Wireless.

Thanks again to Verizon Wireless for allowing us to test-drive this great device, and look for more reviews of VZW devices in the future!

Froyo update for DROID Incredible begins tomorrow night

What a busy day in Android land today. Droid-Life has just reported that the Froyo update for Droid Incredible users will begin tomorrow evening. This is beginning to sound like the boy who cried wolf.

However, this time it looks to be legit, as VZW has launched their support page for this: http://support.vzw.com/system_update/htc_incredible.html, from there you can read the info on the update and also the instructions on how to update your Incredible.

Here are a few of the enhancements that you will be seeing on your Incredible:

* Improved Web browsing with pre-installed Adobe Flash Player 10.1 for Android;
* Support for 720p video recording;
* Transfer data faster with 801.11n Wi-Fi capabilities;
* Easily switch between the 8 most recent applications
* Enhanced browser performance for faster loading of JavaScript heavy pages

Among many other enhancements, hit the link above to see the rest of the enhancements.

Personally, I can’t wait to get this update, I’ve been running 2.2 on my DROID for awhile and I love the enhancements. Granted, different animal, I know, as the UI is different, but still. It’ll make users happy.

Let’s do this VZW, roll it out! Good on ya for getting this out to us in a timely fashion (IMO it hasn’t been that bad waiting), can’t wait to load this up.

Android News: New Froyo Build: CyanogenMod-6 Available From XDA Developers

August 6, 2010 Leave a comment

I admit that I’m not that up-to-date on the latest OS developments for Android, but I thought I’d throw this tidbit of information out there to Android users that vataloco from XDA Developers has released an awesome 2.2 Froyo build. I’m sure several of you Android gurus out there have no problem working with these non-official builds. It seems pretty daunting to me coming from the Blackberry side of things. I plan on adding an Android device to my stable in the very near future, so I’ll be contacting my peeps “in-the-know” when I’m ready to jump on board.

You can get the full details on the build at this link. Let us know what you think with a comment, please.

Thanks

Tony

P.S. Have a great weekend from Kelly, Philip and myself at Team TSR!!! Get SAUCED!!!

Froyo to be pushed to Motorola Droid this week

August 2, 2010 2 comments

Verizon Wireless has announced through various tweets that they will be pushing Froyo, AKA Android 2.2 to their Motorola DROID handsets sometime this week. No definite date yet on when they’ll start the push or who will get it first.

I know that there are many DROID owners out there that have been eager to get Froyo on their devices, so this should make many people very happy, considering that the device was launched in November 2009 and has been slow to get updates since birth.

We’ll keep our eyes open for this push and let you know when they start rolling out so that you can keep an eye out on your own device. Be sure to let us know when you get your push!

Copy of just one tweet from the VZW camp:

RT @VerizonWireless Verizon Wireless pushes Froyo, Android 2.2, to the Droid by Motorola (introduced November 2009) this week. Um, yay.

The rest if the tweets I saw today were from VZW PR people backing up this statement.

Motorola Droid To Receive Froyo 2.2 On July 13???

July 4, 2010 1 comment

Take this with a grain of salt but the rumor mill has it that Verizon Motorola Droid owners may receive the upgrade from 2.1 to 2.2 Froyo on July 13. Is it a coincidence that this would come 2 days before the launch of the much anticipated Droid X? This very well could happen as Verizon tends to push OS upgrades on Tuesdays as the 2.1 Android OS update was indeed pushed out on a Tuesday.

The Motorola Droid may be seen as an “old” device to some as the launch of the Droid X nears, but I’ll bet the farm that current Droid users will be stoked to receive this update to 2.2 Froyo to be kept up with the latest operating system. Are you a Droid user and excited about this upcoming update? Give us a shoutout in the comments with your thoughts.

Froyo official on Nexus One?

June 13, 2010 1 comment

The folks over at Sizzled Core posted this picture of what appears to be Froyo running on the Nexus One (FRF72). However, it’s speculated that this might be for internal Google employees, and perhaps NOT for public consumption.

Only time will tell if this will roll out to the rest of you Nexus One users…..and if so, when?

I guess the question remains….is this legit?

Froyo Anyone? Android 2.2: What To Expect

May 22, 2010 2 comments
If you had been paying attention at all this week, you’d know that at Google I/O there were some pretty big announcements made about the Android OS platform. The newest platform to hit the public will be Android 2.2, dubbed “Froyo”, and let me tell you, there are some pretty big changes to this OS.
Here are the 5 biggest changes that you will see on your Android device when this drops:

Performance & speed: The new Dalvik JIT compiler in Android 2.2 delivers between a 2-5X performance improvement in CPU-bound code vs. Android 2.1 according to various benchmarks.

New enterprise capabilities: We’ve added Exchange capabilities such as account auto-discovery and calendar sync. Device policy management APIs allow developers to write applications that can control security features of the device such as the remote wipe, minimum password, lockscreen timeout etc.

Faster, more powerful browser: We have brought the V8 JavaScript engine to the Android browser as part of 2.2. This has resulted in a 2-3X improvement in JavaScript performance vs. 2.1.

Rich set of new APIs and services: New data backup APIs enable apps to participate in data backup and restore, allowing an application’s last data to be restored when installed on a new or a reset device. Apps can utilize Android Cloud to Device Messaging to enable mobile alert, send to phone, and two-way push sync functionality. Developers can now declare whether their app should be installed on internal memory or an SD card. They can also let the system automatically determine the install location. On the native side, a new API now gives access to Skia bitmaps.

Additions to Android Market: Android Market provides Android Application Error Reports, a new bug reporting feature, giving developers access to crash and freeze reports from users. Developers will be able to access these reports via their account on the Android Market publisher website.

RIM, Apple, etc…. are you listening? Now’s the time to step up your game. We’ve got some healthy competition out there now, and it’s a great time to be a smartphone user, that’s for sure.
This will not be the swan song for Android, this is just the beginning. I think it’s great, and I DO think we’ll see bigger and better things from RIM and Apple in the future. This just pushes everyone to be better.
I think it’s pretty safe to say that this will be ready at the start for the Nexus One and the Motorola Droid. In fact, it appears that it may already be rolling out for the Nexus One. MG Siegler over at TechCrunch was pleased to see that he had a late night surprise waiting for him, in the form of Froyo 2.2! Do you have a Nexus One? If so, did you get the update yet? Let us know!
I also hear that there are port abilities already for the HTC Droid Eris. This is not confirmed yet, however.
Word on the street is that the Incredible will NOT get this anytime in the very near future. Because of the Sense UI, it will have to be put through extra testing to make sure the UI will cooperate with the new OS platform. HTC Incredible users WILL see it, just not at the start.
[thank you Android Developers]
