iOS App Spotlight: Try This App – It’s A “Cinch”

November 16, 2010 Leave a comment

Here’s a pretty cool app for iOS devices called Cinch. It’s a great app for sharing audio, text and photo updates via your iPhone or iPod Touch. You can easily broadcast your information via Twitter, Facebook, CinchCast.com and more! Pretty cool, eh? Current version is 1.6. Let’s take a look at Cinch.

You can either sign up at CinchCast.com or authorize your Facebook and/or Twitter account to post via the app. Just hit the “Record” button as shown above (you’ll have about 3 seconds before recording) and speak your peace. Once completed you’ll have the option to send to CinchCast.com, Facebook or to Twitter. You even have the option to post to your own personal blog if you have one.

You can see above that you can add pics to your recordings, tag your current location and announce what you are saying before sharing. Checking the CinchCast.com website you can find various people to follow and those will be synced to your app as well. I gave the app a good workout and I’m really pleased with it.

You can read much more at the CinchCast site here.

What’s New in Version 1.6
● Simplified recording, adding pictures and text, and publishing.
● iOS 4 support.
● Multitasking support (fast app switching and background completion of recording and publishing).
● Retina display support.

You can’t pass this up since it’s FREE!!! Doesn’t get any cheaper than that, eh? Here’s the iTunes App Store link.

Give it a shot…you’ll be glad you did. Hit us up with a comment if you give this app a go.

BBM for The Rest Of Us

November 14, 2010 2 comments

Before switching to my iPhone 4 a couple months ago, I was a long time BlackBerry user. I briefly switched to Android, but returned to BlackBerry in a matter of months. Why? I missed BBMing. Now that many people are switching to Android and iPhone from BlackBerry there are a number of cross platform applications that try to imitate that beautiful BBM experience. Today we will be looking at the two most used: PingChat! and Kik Messenger. They are both available on BlackBerry, iOS and Android. Note: This is from an iOS point of view. Feel free to shoot off in the comments on how these apps work for your platform.

Boxcar 4.0 For iOS – Launch Immiment

November 12, 2010 Leave a comment

The Boxcar push notification app for iOS devices is receiving a major upgrade and should be available in the iTunes App Store any time now. I have personally had fiascos with various iOS apps with push notifications overriding each other and it all just ended up being a huge hassle. Version 4.0 of Boxcar should alleviate that. Check below for the latest:

They’re now launching version 4.0 of the app, and it’s by far the best yet. The entire app has been overhauled from the ground up. The result is a killer management system for Push Notifications. Apple needs to buy this company.

While previous versions of the app gave you a time-ordered stream of your notifications, it was somewhat daunting to look at. And you couldn’t do much from in the app itself. The new design makes everything much easier to manage and more visually appealing. For example, notifications from Twitter now show up complete with the user’s profile picture. And you can retweet or reply to any of those message right from within Boxcar.

The app itself has taken a design cue from the excellent Facebook iPhone app and features a home screen with nice looking big buttons for each service you have activated. There is also now Retina Display support if you have the iPhone 4. All of this works on the iPod touch and iPad as well.

And 4.0 brings Support for a host of new services. Google Buzz, Google Voice, Github, App Recommendations, and a few others are all now included and can be installed with a few easy steps. These App Recommendations are done by Boxcar themselves.

Boxcar is now a team of 5 people based in New York City. To date, they’ve delivered over 500 million notifications to iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads.

Boxcar is a free download in the App Store (though it’s $4.99 if you wish to disable in-app advertising). You can find it here. Version 4.0 should be live shortly.

I’m heading to the App Store to grab it as soon as it comes down the pipe. Looking forward to seeing the improvements and seeing if it delivers the goods on my iPod Touch 4th Generation. Give us a shout in the comments if you’re going to get your Boxcar on.

Fullscreen Mobile Gmail – Try It On Your iOS Device

November 11, 2010 Leave a comment

Do you enjoy using the Gmail Mobile App on your iOS device? So much in fact that you don’t even fire up the native Mail app? The only problem is that Safari’s navigation bar is stuck down at the bottom taking up much needed screen space. You know what? Now, there’s a fix for that! Please read below:

So, you love the new mobile Gmail for iPhone so much you’ve stopped using the Mail app. The only problem is, you hate how Safari’s navigation bar is stuck at the bottom eating up useful screen space! I hate it too – that’s why I put together a simple link to launch Gmail into fullscreen (App) mode. Here’s how you do it:

1. From your iPhone, tap here or go to ckcallen.com/gmail
2. Be quick, though, you only have 2 seconds to save the page to your homescreen before it redirects to Gmail
3. Once you save it to your homescreen, touch it to launch

You’ll also have a nice retina-ready icon to keep on your homescreen (yup, its the one up there).

Works a treat on my iPod Touch 4th Generation! Try it and see! Give us a shout and let us know how it’s working on your iOS device.

iOS App Spotlight: Symple Notes By Lepidu Development

November 7, 2010 Leave a comment

I am an iPod Touch 4th Generation owner and I’ve been looking for an app that is more developed and offers more options than the native Notes app. Symple Notes from Lepidu Development fills that need and then some. @the0rkus on Twitter introduced me to this app and I was excited to install it on my iPod Touch and give it a go. Here are the details on the app:

About Symple Notes

Symple Notes is an easy to use notes application built for the iOS platform. With the ability to add uploaded images to popular image hosting services such as CloudApp and DropBox, it enables you to have even more content in your note!

By including the share function, it is easy for you to share your notes with colleagues via email, with friends via Facebook and Twitter. We also allow you to share via Tumblr!

The option to take photos to attach to your notes is a valuable integration method. TwitLonger will be supported very soon as well. It offers unlimited notes too! Can’t beat that, right? Below is an example of a note and the options to share:

My advice? Get it now! You will NOT regret it! You can also fan up their Facebook Page here.

The app is available in the iTunes App Store for the great price of only $0.99!!! Grab it here. Give ‘em a follow @SympleNotesApp on Twitter as well.

This is now one of my “go-to” iPod Touch apps for sure! You’ll enjoy it too! Thanks again to Lepidu Development for allowing me to review this great iOS application.

Google Instant – Availability For Mobile Devices Starts Now!!!

November 4, 2010 Leave a comment

Stupendous news for you mobile smartphone users out there…Google Instant is now available for many devices! Woot! Instant Search enables instantaneous results as you type (not just predictive text). It’s available for most iOS and Android devices. More details from Google below:

The power of Google Instant, now in your pocket
Thursday, November 4, 2010 | 1:01 PM
(Cross-posted on the Official Google Blog.)

Google Instant makes search faster by displaying not just predictions but actual search results as you type. This saves valuable time on a desktop browser, but wouldn’t it be great to have Google Instant on mobile devices, where each keystroke and page load is much slower and you frequently have just a moment to find the information you need?

In September we announced that we were working to bring Google Instant to mobile, and today we’re making a beta version available to most iPhone and Android devices in the U.S. To try it out, go to google.com in your phone’s browser and tap the Google Instant “Turn on” link beneath the search box (if you don’t see the “Turn on” link, try waiting a moment and then refresh the page).

Like the desktop version of Google Instant, when you type on your mobile device you’ll see predictions of what you might be searching for. If you type [anse], for example, you should see [ansel adams] along with other predictions. Results for the first prediction appear automatically, and tapping on the other predictions will display those results. Pressing the enter key or the search button skips the predictions and will display results for exactly what you’ve typed. Check out our demo video:

With Google Instant on mobile, we’re pushing the limits of mobile browsers and wireless networks. You will probably notice a big improvement in speed when you search thanks to a new AJAX and HTML5 implementation for mobile that dynamically updates the page with new results and eliminates the need to load a new page for each query.

Google Instant for mobile works best on 3G and WiFi networks, but since the quality of any wireless connection can fluctuate, we’ve made it easy to enable or disable Google Instant without ever leaving the page. Just tap the “Turn on” or “Turn off” link.

We hope you’ll enjoy using Google Instant for mobile as much as we enjoyed making it. It’s currently available for Android 2.2 (“Froyo”) devices and iPhones and iPods running iOS 4 in the U.S. in English. We’re working to support additional countries and languages and more devices in the coming months, so stay tuned.

Check out the video of Google Instant in action below and let us know if you’ve fired it up and enjoying it.
