Samsung Releases Giorgio Armani Branded Galaxy S Smartphone

November 16, 2010 1 comment

Samsung announced today that they’re releasing a Giorgio Armani branded Galaxy S Smartphone globally in 2011. It will roll out at first in Italy, but will then roll out everywhere else soon after.

The Giorgio Armani Samsung Galaxy S looks a lot like the AT&T Samsung Captivate. However, it comes with a Giorgio Armani logo, a special Giorgio Armani designed user interface with exclusive content, ring tones, fonts, and on/off animations. The device also runs Android 2.2 Froyo, and comes with Flash 10.1 support included.

So….. what do you think? There’s a smartphone out there for everyone? Do we have any Giorgio Armani fans out there that are just itching to get their hands on this one?

Galaxy Tab 2 on Video with AMOLED Screen

November 15, 2010 Leave a comment

It is like the old cliche, you’ve got to call a duck a duck.  If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, it’s a duck, and what we have here is a 7″ AMOLED Galaxy Tab shown at FPD-International in Japan.  The Samsung booth had an array of prototypes on hand from flexible AMOLED displays to a 3D AMOLED TV.  These are the kind of conferences I need to start attending because it is great to see the highest technology on display for everyone to see.

This  AMOLED screen has a resolution of 1024 x 600, and is reportedly due out in 2011.  The video I have included in this post is taken in  the Samsung booth at this conference by the folks at netbooknews.com.  The entire almost-4 minute video is worth watching if you want a look into the future of LCD technology at Samsung (read: folding 5″ AMOLED screen, flexible AMOLEDs), but the spot specific to the AMOLED-outfitted Galaxy Tab is just shy of the 1 minute mark.

Pretty cool, specifically about the Galaxy Tab as that is technology we will most likely see in the U.S.  Thoughts?  Will you hold off on buying the TFT-LCD Galaxy Tab, waiting for this new screen?  Let us know in the comments!

Samsung Nexus S Specs Leak, Launch Imminent?

November 15, 2010 Leave a comment

Over the past week we have seen multiple sources begin to leak out information about the Samsung Nexus S.  Engadget leaked the first (actual?) images of the device, the rear-view of which can be seen above.  Today’s big news surrounding this long-rumored phone is all about specifications.  Pictures are dandy as they give a rough estimate to final shape and help prove such a device does exist on more than paper, but specifications are what will sell this new phone from Samsung/Google.

What is in store for the future Nexus S owners?  The (Best Buy) screen capture posted by phandroid starts to outline how competitive this smartphone will be.  For starters, the supported network bands speak to T-mobile’s towers.  This fits with the screen capture pulled from Google Cache by phoneArena.com.  Unfortunate enough is that the Nexus S is not including support for T-Mobile’s HSPA+ at this time (this could all change before launch, as most of this information is about pre-production units).  The camera has a 5.0 MP sensor and the power comes from a 1500mAh unit.  Still missing from the specification sheets are some of the most important details of processor speed (although rumored to be a dual-core unit), operating system (Gingerbread has been mentioned), and memory capacity.

Do you own a Nexus One?  Looking to pick up the next iteration in the Nexus series before the end of 2010?  Sound off in the comments section and let us know your plans!

Samsung Upping the Ante with New Phone + Gingerbread

November 12, 2010 Leave a comment

Talk about Friday good news!  Engadget has posted a spec-rich image this morning detailing what looks to be the next high-end phone from Samsung.  This phone looks like a serious workhorse.  The specifications are lust-worthy and the sleek design and thickness are a testament to the miniaturization of electronics.

Features and Hardware:

  • Full HD – 1080p playback and record
  • Android Gingerbread
  • 14.4Mbps HSDPA / 5.76Mbps HSUPA
  • 1.2Ghz processor
  • 16GB onboard memory
  • 8MP camera with LED flash
  • Wifi b/g/n
  • Clouding services (C2DM) with Google Mobile Services
  • 4.3″ WVGA sAMOLED2 (says both 4.3″ and 4.5″ in the image…)
  • BT3.0

Also from the image it looks like this device will hit the market at some point during the first half of 2011!  That could mean anywhere from January to June, but let’s be honest, for product development it likely means May-June 2011.  Would make a great graduation present for those heading into the real world next May!

We will keep you posted on this one as it looks to be a serious contender in 2011!

Samsung Galaxy Tablet + AT&T = November 21st?

November 11, 2010 Leave a comment

The dam is about to bust on the eagerly-awaiting Samsung Galaxy Tablet and its availability on the major networks (already actually announced on Sprint, T-Mo, and Verizon).  Today there a is a post on engadget from a tipster showing what is allegedly an AT&T screen capture detailing the availability of this hot new tablet.

From the screen capture:

  • “No Commitment” pricing will be $649.99
  • DataConnect Pass Plans will be: $14.99/mo (250Mb/mo) and $25.00/mo (2GB/mo)

These data plans are identical to the iPad plans, so nothing too new here.  What is questionable is the overall pricing of the device.  The AT&T device is more expensive than the announced T-Mo or Verizon by $50, and $20 more expensive than the larger-screen iPad.  I am sure there is a strategy here, time will tell what exactly that strategy is.

Sound off in the comments below and let us know your thoughts, will you be picking one of these up in the following days/weeks?

Samsung Galaxy Tab To Be First Android Device To Feature Wall Street Journal App

November 11, 2010 Leave a comment

Looks like Dow Jones has found the perfect outlet for featuring the Wall Street Journal paper…the Samsung Galaxy Tab. There are several Wall Street apps for Android in the Market but this is the first of its kind. Check below for the details:

Android users have many Wall Street based apps that can be installed. But the most famous source of news and market information, The Wall Street Journal, has been conspicuous by its absence in the Android Market. But now, Dow Jones has found the perfect Android outlet for the paper-the Samsung Galaxy Tab.

For $3.99 per week, close to the cost of the physical paper, each business day the app will download the Digital Edition of the WSJ on the tablet at about the same time that the physical edition is being delivered to readers. Content will be the same as in the print edition with the ability for you to swipe from section to section or article to article. Are you a big fan of “Heard on the Street? The app will make sure that you have access to the column at the same time as those who get the physical WSJ and head off to work with ink-stained fingers.

Daniel Bernard, chief product officer of the Wall Street Journal’s Digital Network said, “The WSJ Tablet Edition for Android continues to blend the best of print and online with an experience that showcases our strength of innovation and original delivery of content.”

Flexible AMOLED’s the future?

November 7, 2010 1 comment

Several days ago, a tech blog over in Asia and BGR reported that Samsung was showing off a 4.5 inch flexible AMOLED. My guess is that would would use this in cellphones but that could mean that the size of phones could be shrinking. Details are short but this could improve current AMOLED production and make them more available for phones coming into the market. With a 800×480 resolution, it  would fit perfectly with most of the phone OS’s out in the market currently like Android, Windows Phone 7, BlackBerry 6, or something new that hasn’t been released yet. Low power consumption and great refresh rate are two big keys with this display. Hopefully we will see more of type of technology as it becomes more common. What’s your thoughts on this?

Joining the HTC Surround and LG Quantum as AT&T’s trio of Windows Phone 7 smartphones, the Focus definitely shines brightly due to its sharp and brilliant 4” Super AMOLED touchscreen. The high flying handset is slated to go on sale starting November 8th for the 2-year contract price of $199.99 – which makes it fitting with all the others set at that price point.
